Turkey’s Security Agencies Fight an Online Network Producing Fake Passports

Turkish security services have increasingly taken steps against an online network producing high-quality fake passports used by individuals associated with Islamic State (IS) to travel into Europe and America, according to The Guardian newspaper. This industry has experienced exponential growth.

One such network, run by an Uzbek living in Turkey, reportedly provided passports to at least 10 clients tied to IS who illegally entered Turkey from Syria before heading on their journey across Europe.

Istanbul Global Consulting sells passports on Telegram through an online platform called the Safe Passport Exchange that purports to be from various countries – Russia and Bulgaria specifically – featuring authentic security watermarks, holograms and biometric chips.

These books come in all sorts of sizes and formats; the cheaper versions often feature one or two pages with no photos at all, while more advanced models may feature full-page pictures and come in an assortment of colours.

The US Department of Homeland Security announced yesterday that they have identified a passport seller in Turkey who provides IS members with highly advanced and falsified documents. According to US agency, interlocutors who speak Russian, Arabic and other languages help provide documents specifically targeted towards IS customers.
