How to Get a Passport

Passport acquisition is the cornerstone of international travel. No matter your citizenship status – Australian, dual nationality or visitor – having a valid passport allows entry to other countries.

The Australian Passport Office is responsible for issuing Australian passports to Australian citizens and dual citizens living both within Australia and overseas. They issue them online, through Australia Post outlets or Australian embassies or consates around the world.

Step 1: Acquire or Renew an Existing Passport

To apply for a passport, either fill out and print out the online application form or collect one at your local Post Office.

Step 2: Provide Documents to Verify Identity and Address

The documents you present should be up-to-date, showing current residential addresses in Australia – these might include your birth certificate, marriage license or citizenship document.

Step 3: Submit Photos To apply for your first passport, three identical colour photos no more than six months old must be sent to us with an endorsement by one referee/guarantor on one photo page to indicate it as “This is a true photo of [your full name].” and signed off the back.

Step 4: Submit Your Application at the Australian Passport Office

Obtaining or renewing an existing passport can take anywhere between four to six weeks; urgent applications can pay an increased fee in exchange for priority processing.
