How to Get a Passport in Spain

Have you tried applying for a passport in Spain before? The process can be arduous. A number of requirements need to be fulfilled in order to receive one; these include living uninterrupted for at least 10 years in Spain while being integrated into society and possessing knowledge of its language.

Before applying for a passport in Spain, the first step should be making an appointment at the DGT. You can either request one online or go directly to one of its offices with all your documents.

At your appointment, you will receive your passport in a 32-page burgundy booklet featuring your photograph, signature, key personal data and unique passport number.

Passports issued since 2015 also contain electronic chips that enable emergency contact details to be linked directly with them, while modern passports also come equipped with biometric security measures.

Current passport fees in Spain are EUR30 for initial, renewal and replacement passports issued to adults and minors alike. Large family status holders do not incur this charge which must be paid either electronically or in cash at their passport appointment.

To become a citizen of Spain, one must have lived there for at least ten years and owned property there for five. Furthermore, you must renounce your citizenship from wherever you were born or reside unless it applies specifically for French, Portuguese, Andorran or Equatorial Guinea citizens as well as some Latin American countries like Philippines citizens.
