Errors on real id credit checks can make renting an apartment or office space challenging, yet are common and can easily be corrected. Luckily, errors on background checks are often easily rectifiable.

Congress responded to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 with legislation known as the REAL ID Act, which establishes security, authentication and issuance standards for state driver’s licenses and ID cards, while also addressing immigration-related matters. Furthermore, federal agencies will no longer accept state issued drivers licenses unless they meet DHS standards in terms of accessing federal facilities or boarding commercial aircraft.

Individuals seeking to obtain a REAL ID should visit the DMV and present all required documentation, which varies by state; most DMV websites offer online checklists identifying those needed. Individuals already holding valid driver’s license or ID cards can upgrade to REAL ID status when renewing or applying for one at any time; generally two documents from the checklist will suffice in qualifying them for such IDs.

One cannot use their standard driver’s license or ID card to board domestic flights or gain access to certain federal facilities, like military bases, without first obtaining a REAL ID. While requirements differ by state, most require proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security number, two proofs of principal address as proofs of principal residence as well as lawful status in the US – although homelessness certification letters can serve as alternative proofs of address but still need to provide evidence of identity, date of birth and Social Security number in order to qualify.
