How to Get a Real ID in Time for 9/11

Being identified is more than showing off your name and photo; it also requires meeting federal security standards outlined by the Real ID Act created after Sept. 11 attacks. Passed in 2005, this law stipulates minimum standards for driver’s licenses and identification cards accepted for certain federal purposes such as accessing government facilities and nuclear power plants as well as boarding airline flights within the US.

Pilgrim found meeting these standards difficult; she spent weeks gathering all necessary documents, which required all having the same address – something easier said than done for someone moving apartments regularly such as herself.

Once she had all her documents in order, Pilgrim scheduled an appointment at the Laguna Beach DMV in an effort to beat out any potential crowds; but instead encountered an already long line circling around the building; therefore she spent three hours waiting in line before receiving her new ID and will no longer be eligible to fly or enter government facilities until obtaining alternative forms of ID such as passport or military ID card.
