How to Get a REAL ID Without a Parent at 18
If you want to use your driver’s license or ID card as proof of identity for entry to federal facilities and military installations, then a REAL ID is necessary. A REAL ID is defined as any state-issued driver’s license that meets minimum security standards set forth by Congress under the REAL ID Act of 2005; they feature a golden bear and star symbol as identification.
To qualify for a REAL ID, you must present two proofs of U.S. citizenship, legal presence in the country (such as a valid passport), and two proofs of residence in your state. Additional documents may be necessary if you are applying under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
Important Information Regarding Name Change: If the name on your proof of identity differs from your legal name, an acceptable form of documentation for showing this change must be provided as proof. Acceptable documents could include marriage certificates filed with government agencies and courts, divorce decrees or court orders.
Choose between getting a REAL ID, an enhanced ID or a standard driver’s license/ID card from the DMV office. A REAL ID will give you access to domestic commercial flights as of 2025 as well as certain federal facilities; while your standard DL/ID will still serve as valid proof of identity for other purposes. When visiting, however, bring all necessary documents.
