How to Spot a Fake Passport
Passports are essential identity documents when making large purchases, renting a home, or finding employment. Unfortunately, it can be challenging for non-security experts and non-specialists alike to spot fake passports.
A simple way to spot a counterfeit passport is to inspect its physical appearance. Legitimate passports should feature standard colors and clear printing of their information; those issued without one often feature small text. Conversely, forgery passports often boast multiple colors and irregular prints of text on them compared to legitimate documents.
There are multiple methods available to you to detect fake passports, including:
Altered IDs – Carefully inspect the front and back surfaces of ID cards to detect bumps, ridges or irregularities, while also gently running your thumb across their surfaces to feel their surface with your thumb.
Alterations – Counterfeits often alter signature, date of birth or barcode sizes or colors, font sizes or images in counterfeit products. They may even make changes to photos.
Film Overlay – Counterfeit notes may feature an ultra-thin protective coating which can be seen by tilting or using UV lights to view them. This type of counterfeit is easily detectable.
Tactile Features – Some fake documents feature tactile features that set them apart from genuine documents, including decreased weight, unique textures or flexibility. These might include reduced thickness.
If you suspect your passport or visa may have been falsified, contact an immigration attorney as soon as possible. Fraudulent documentation can lead to jail time and significant fines; act quickly!
