How to Spot Fake Military ID Cards
Military ID cards provide members of the Armed Forces with official proof of membership, while providing access to numerous benefits – from special mortgage rates and free medical care coverage, to special mortgage rates and free health care coverage. Unfortunately, fraudsters have found ways to counterfeit these IDs for personal gain or impersonate servicemembers for personal gain – making identification simple when you know what signs to look out for. Luckily, it’s easy to spot fakes once you know what features to look out for!
First, inspect the card to make sure it has not been falsified or altered in any way. If it appears smudged or laminated, it could be counterfeit. Run your fingers over it to detect signs of tampering or damage; thick and durable cards should also be present. Furthermore, the person presenting their ID should be able to provide their date of birth and state.
Additionally, it is advisable to verify the individual’s name, branch of service, agency/department and rank. If there is any discrepancy between their credentials and those on their card, ask them for alternative forms of proof such as their official military record or DD Form 214 which lists past service. Businesses are usually required by law to check IDs before selling alcohol or entering age-restricted venues and any failure on your part could incur heavy fines from authorities.
