New York residents must soon upgrade their driver’s license or ID card to meet federal identity documents standards, making REAL ID cards suitable for entering some government buildings, military bases and commercial flights. You’ll need an appointment and payment of replacement licensing fee before having your photo validated and imaged; also you will be required to provide evidence of lawful status within the US as well as having your thumbprint scanned.
