Vehicles You Can Drive With a Provisional License
A provisional driving license (also called learner’s permit) enables young drivers to practice under supervision. They typically apply for it once they turn 15 years and 9 months old and begin driving at 16 (or 17 if receiving Personal Independence Payment mobility component) years old.
With a provisional licence, you are legally permitted to drive most cars and vans on all roads except motorways if supervised by someone over 25 or who holds a full driving licence for at least three years – whether this person be paid as your instructor, a friend or family member meeting certain criteria, or both – providing they can read a number plate from 20 metres away without glasses/contact lenses being necessary.
Dependent upon the car you’re driving, certain restrictions exist as to the number and times of day you can travel. To circumvent these obstacles, one way is to pass your driving test and obtain a full driving licence.
Your teenager applying for their P licence must buy car insurance first. While this may be costly, there are options to help reduce costs such as non-owner car policies that cover teen drivers while they learn.
